what I'd like to know, and which I haven't yet found, is what size is the toxic zone around the actual plants that are separating the sand from the tar? If we were to treat the oil sands mines and processing plants as something like Chernobyl, or Fukashima, with their danger radii, what would it be?
Rivers run through this zone, collecting toxins from ground water and holding pond seepage. Does the technology exist to put the whole river into a filter culvert? or a series of such filters?

Good template for a guideline and framework for design strategies: a level balance between each major entity: industrial / environmental / social domestic / social cultural / technological.

We find the general statement and solution of family, health, well-being, integrated community, and sustainable building, sport and recreation to be a holistic and worthy ambition for the people who would exist alongside the heavy industry.

Reuse of the buildings is interesting and could be the focus of further exploration, development and expression
